What Questions Should I Ask When Choosing a Summer Camp?

- Soteria Advisors, LLC

When considering a youth summer camp for your children, safety should be your main focus.

We all want our kids to have a fantastic summer camp experience! One where they get an opportunity to make new friends, try new things, learn new skills or even focus on activities they already love. As a parent, you need to ask a variety of questions to ensure the camp you choose is safe, well-organized and aligned with their child's interests and needs.

With regard to safety, here are some essential questions that you need answers to before registering your child:

- Are all staff and volunteers, 14 years of age and older, subject to a full child abuse background check that includes clearance from the state police, state child welfare department, National Sex Offender Registry and FBI?

- Are all staff and volunteers that are responsible for transporting campers subject to the above child abuse clearances and a driving records check?

- Are all staff and volunteers trained on child supervision, child sexual abuse prevention and mandatory reporting procedures?

- Does the camp employ a registered nurse that is on site during all operating hours?

- What is the staff-to-camper ratio? (This should be different for different age groups.)

- Does the camp have emergency action plans and policies for medical emergencies, extreme weather events and intruder situations?

- How will the camp communicate with the families if there is an emergency?

- How are the campers supervised during free time?

Choosing a summer camp takes time to research. Asking these questions will help parents make an informed decision and ensure that the camp aligns with their child's interests, needs and safety requirements. Happy Camping!
